Recognition at work

To recognize is to notice the real work and the people behind it, to say it simply, and to value it. It is one of the most powerful drivers of motivation and engagement. It is also the most overlooked.

What we mean

Notice it, say it, value it

Recognition is not a bonus or a polite thank-you. It is about the real work, the way it is done, the effort behind it, and the person themselves.

When it is sincere and regular, it feeds a sense of usefulness, belonging and meaning at work.

The state of play

Engagement at work is at a low

13%

of employees say they are engaged at work in Europe.

8%

in France, one of the lowest rates.

23%

worldwide, the average stays low.

Why it works

The three drivers of motivation

Research in work psychology is clear. Recognition feeds three basic needs: relatedness, autonomy and competence. When they are met, motivation becomes more autonomous and well-being follows.

Good to know

Recognition takes four forms

The person

Recognizing someone for who they are, beyond their results.

The way of working

Valuing how the work is done, the skills, the care taken.

The effort

Seeing the investment and energy, even before the result is there.

The results

Celebrating what has been produced and achieved.

Based on Jean-Pierre Brun's model of recognition at work (Université Laval).

Written recognition

Effective recognition

Frequent, varied, sincere, for everyone

Recognition that works is frequent rather than rare, varied rather than repetitive, sincere rather than automatic, and open to all rather than reserved for managers.

Our analysis on the platform shows it: only 18% of written messages are true recognition. The rest splits between appreciation (26%), kindness and compliments (50%) and politeness (5%). Recognizing well can be learned.

FAQ

Recognition at work, made simple

Is recognition the same as a bonus?
No. Pay meets one need, recognition feeds others: meaning, belonging, usefulness. They are complementary, but money does not replace real feedback on the work done.
Can it be measured?
Yes. An independent study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies measured concrete effects of Listen Leon on motivation, well-being and strengths use. See our science page.
Who should recognize?
Everyone. Managers, colleagues, but also clients, patients, residents or parents. 360° recognition opens the gesture to all.
How do we start?
With a simple, regular gesture, then by structuring the approach. A training phase often helps move from politeness to real recognition.
How does Listen Leon help?
We make recognition simple, frequent and shared, with a lasting trace, like a personal guest book. After moderation, each message is read by its recipient.
Are messages moderated?
Yes. On Listen Leon, every message is reviewed before it reaches its recipient.
